Assistant Fire Chief, Louie Snyder, who has been with the Clyde Fire Department since 1974, was on hand to help the Heritage Village of Clyde owners, staff and residents with the ribbon cutting ceremony. Guests of the Compass, Dementia Navigation Program grand opening walked the red carpet, smiled for the photographer and enjoyed themed snacks and refreshments at the Movie Premier-themed event. Heritage Village of Clyde celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated, safely secured, environment for the treatment and management of cognitive impairment in the hopes of caring for the many Ohioans suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, other dementias and cognitive impairments. Attendees received a personalized tour of the Compass Secured Environment, as well as the newly renovated Rehabilitation Therapy Gym and the Resident Lodging for Short Term Rehab.
Eric Hutchins, Certified Dementia Practitioner and Executive Director of the 85-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation center in the heart of Clyde, tells us, “The program focuses on three essential components; extensively skilled and knowledgeable staff, robust therapeutic life enrichment programs and a safely secured environment.”
The secured environment will be home for up to 32 individuals with amenities such as newly renovated lodging with modern décor; continental breakfast, lunch and dinner service, guest meals and the “Always Available” snack pantry. Housekeeping, personal laundry service, cable TV, on-site beauty/barber and an outside courtyard ensures comfort and convenience. The social lounge and sensory room serve as resources in the enrichment programs.
“A sensory room is created as a therapeutic environment to deliver high levels of stimuli to patients with dementia”, Mr. Hutchins explains. “It is a private room displaying optical illusions with combined lighting effects, aromas, colors, textures and sounds to stimulate a person's olfactory, auditory and gustatory systems. We offer options such as a Bubble Machine, a Sound Spa Relaxation System, a Relax and Renew Aromatherapy Stream Diffuser, a Volcanic Lamp, an Electric Jellyfish Mood Lamp, and soothing artwork.”
Specialized techniques are offered of help integrate rather than manage behaviors. Reminiscing/Activity Baskets and Fiddle Boxes are a collection of items gathered and placed into a box/container, based on a specific topic, to elicit responses to all senses. An example might be a Kitchen, Garden, Sports, Religion, Hobby, or Sewing kit. Weighted Blankets, Gel Lap Pads and Sensory Cushions provide comfort, alleviate restlessness and de-escalate individuals with dementia. Tools such as Playable Art Ball and Perfect Petzz provide tactile and visual stimulation, as well as exercise that keeps the hands limber.
The Compass Dementia Navigation Program also offers Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Therapeutic Modalities, and 24 Hour Skilled Nursing. Local physician, Dr. Valone, is the Medical Director and psychiatry services, social services and pastoral care services are available. Medicare, Medicaid, Insurances, Private Pay and Veteran’s Administration cover the costs of services.
